I find basting tape to be an essential for me, especially when working with thick fabrics and webbing. I find tearing it difficult, so I use a multistep process of rolling it down with a quilting seamer, snipping the paper with a small knife, and pulling the paper off with a stiletto. Even then it's faster and more reliable than pins (which I'm not a fan of) and holds better than clips. I sometimes use clips to hold an additional layer on top of a taped layer, or clips alone for thinner fabrics. I do use silk pins for sheer fabrics sometimes.

I'm a retired custom upholster, and I never knew this. I stitched virtually every job using the standard upholstery needles that came with my machine. This explains many of the things I noticed about using the needles I worked with when stitching custom leather jobs.

Hi! Does anyone know how to put contours (cutouts) in Memory Foam? I am trying to develop a car seat cushion that has shaped contours for butt and legs in the cushion? I appreciate any ideas or direction you can give. Thanks!
